In 1934, Archbishop Howard Mowll inaugurated the first Winter Appeal for people in need. That appeal was launched in the wake of the Great Depression when unemployment was high and many in our city and its surrounds were in great need. In 2017 so much has changed, and yet there are still so many vulnerable people in our community who need our care.
Through its Community Care program, the Archbishop of Sydney’s Anglican Aid provides financial support to churches to run projects that help people in need.
- Across Sydney, the Jesus Club helps churches to run activities for people with an intellectual disability. Darren and Brad (pictured above) go to a local Jesus Club where they enjoy the opportunity to make friends, have fun and learn about Jesus.
- In Glebe, the Scarred Tree project seeks to bring healing and restoration in practical ways to Indigenous Australians who have been scarred by trauma, exclusion and injustice.
- All Saints Nowra’s Community Care program provides emergency relief assistance to those in the Shoalhaven community who are financially vulnerable, especially in times of crisis.
- In Riverwood, the local church runs a club to reduce the social isolation of people living with a mental illness. They also help club members to connect to other social services in the area.
Community Care projects care for the lonely, refugees, the elderly, people with a disability, at-risk youth, Indigenous Australians, children, the unemployed. But in each project, the goal is the same—to show the love of Christ to people in our community.
Eighty-three years on from that first Archbishop of Sydney’s Winter Appeal, please consider giving to continue our long tradition of care for disadvantaged communities in our diocese.
