Once an agricultural giant, Zimbabwe is now heavily dependant on foreign aid. The past decade has seen the closure of many companies and Zimbabwe has one of the highest unemployment rates on the continent. Many young men and women are moving abroad looking for better economic prospects. However, sadly they are often caught up in illegal activities, such as the drug trade and diamond panning.
But it is not all doom and gloom. Zimbabwe has been blessed with a good education system and natural resources. Honey World came out of a desire to establish a long term sustainable income generating project for the rural communities of Zimbabwe. While hand outs from NGOs can solve immediate needs, it is projects like Honey World which will transform these communities long term.
The project employs women and other at-risk community members in the production of honey. Through providing the capital for the start-up of this project, Anglican Aid is helping support Honey World to the point of income sustainability. It's projects like these that will ensure Zimbabwe's future economic growth and independence from foreign aid. The recent installation of beehives in the village (pictured) marks the beginning of Honey World's journey to self-sufficiency.
