This project run by Hoxton Park Anglican Church is headed by Rev Sami Youkhana, an Iragi born refugee, who has now begun running Sunday services in Arabic.
Refugees face a number of problems in adjusting to a new life in Australia; these services aim at providing a source of comfort, peace and community for newly arrived refugees who feel lost in Australia. The fact that Sami himself is a refugee from the Middle East means that the program will be accessible and appropriate for struggling refugees living in the area.
Alongside the Sunday services, food, clothing, blankets and household goods are also distributed to families in need of assistance. The project also emphasises community and relationship building activities through a midweek gathering. This is to provide a space for people to get to know one another, helping refugees to feel supported and create new links to help them to settle in more comfortably.
