Lily of the Valley Children’s Village has been operating since 1993. Lily of the Valley is registered with the South African Department of Social Development as a Child and Youth Care Centre for 120 children. They usually have about 120 children in full residential care though this number fluctuates as new children arrive and others are reunified, fostered, transferred or leave on reaching adulthood. The children's ages range from 3 months to 21 years. Some have an intellectual and/or physical disability, many are orphaned, all have suffered some sort of trauma, and many are affected by HIV/AIDS.
The children are housed in 20 individual houses, each with a house mother caring for 6 children, on 19 hectares of property situated in Mophela, near Eston in KwaZulu-Natal province.
As well as residential care, other services that Lily of the Valley provides include:
- an onsite preschool
- the “Eagles” class for children with additional needs that can’t be met in mainstream schools
- supervised and assisted homework programs
- IT training
- a sports program, including soccer, netball and aerobics
- a baking program in which the children sell their baked goods at local markets on weekends
- a music program.
The children also have access to a number of services at Lily of the Valley to ensure their well-being, including:
- social workers
- occupational therapy
- a medical clinic
- a dental clinic.
Lily of the Valley has a full time minister who provides spiritual care for the children and the caregivers. And an exit program helps the children prepare to leave Lily of the Valley and make the transition to adulthood.
The goal of Lily of the Valley Children’s Village is to help each child reach his or her full potential.
Anglican Aid has committed to providing funding for the ongoing operations of the village. Donations to this project will be used for this project only.
All donations to this project are tax deductible.
