South Tamworth Indigenous Outreach

St Peter's Anglican Church, South Tamworth has been working with the Aboriginal Community in Coledale, South Tamworth for the past 7 years, running a Frontyard Church gathering. Coledale is a lower socio economic part of the city with about 3000 people of which about one third are Aboriginal.

A team of about 10 St Peter's people runs the frontyard gathering each week. The Church also visits and follows up with Indigenous families in need, volunteer serving breakfast at a local primary school. These programs offer Indigenous neighbours a safe and peaceful place to gather as a community and somewhere to find hope, as well as Christ-like love practical help and care. Ministry to Aboriginal people more generally in rural towns has often been put into "the too hard basket", but the Coledale Frontyard Church initiative at St Peter's South Tamworth is seeking to proactively address this issue. This projects helps support  programs for indigenous communities and families in Tamworth in Northern NSW. It also supports indigenous leadership training.  George Ferguson (pictured) is an indigenous leaders who oversees much of this community work.

In particular  as well as addressing the need for more theologically trained Indigenous Christians serving the Church and the community in regional parts of Northern NSW.
