Tonga: Volcano Emergency Response

Meet the urgent needs of communities affected by this disaster

Help devastated communities in Tonga

Through your generous support, Anglican Aid will be able to provide the people of Tonga with clean drinking water and essential food supplies, following the eruption of the underwater Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano.

Anglican Aid and the Anglican Relief and Development Fund Australia have partnered with the Tongan Evangelical Wesleyan Church in Sydney and its charity arm in Tonga, Ofa Ki He Masiva. We are also working with Missions New Zealand to provide supplies to four Anglican Churches in the capital, Nuku’alofa, to distribute among their local communities.

Together we are providing supplies such as tinned fish, corned beef, crackers, noodles, soaps and washing detergent, rice, flour, oil, and water.

On 15th of January the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Haʻapai underwater volcano violently erupted causing widespread destruction and devastation. Sadly, the UN has confirmed the deaths of four people in the aftermath of the eruption, and many are injured.

It is believed that this is the largest volcanic event in the past three decades, and the ash ejected by the eruption has covered the entire nation of Tonga. In addition to the initial eruption, the force of this event has caused tsunamis that have landed as far away as Japan and Peru. However Tonga was most drastically impacted by the tsunamis, with waves up to 15m high destroying homes, shops and key infrastructure.

Relief efforts have been hindered due to continuing ashfall and the severance of a major underwater cable that has disrupted communications to many of the islands. Because of this, the full extent of the damage on many of the islands is not known, and aid is not able to be delivered to those in need.

The most pressing concern for the people of Tonga is access to clean air and drinking water, while food and supplies continue to dwindle. Donations will be used to provide these essential amenities as well as other emergency supplies.

Please give generously to support our neighbours in Tonga.
