AFRICA:
St Patrick’s Theological College
Anglican Aid is partnering with St Patrick’s Theological College in the Diocese of Toliara, Madagascar, supporting 50 students and providing funds for the building of new dormitories and classrooms. The students are preparing to be pastors of the many new congregations that have been planted in Madagascar and are studying either a Bachelor of Theology or Diploma of Evangelism.
Rev Berthier Lainirina is the college’s Principal.
Madagascar is one of the poorest countries in the world, with political instability and limited access to education and medical care. When the southern region was hit by a devastating drought in 2020-21 many families starved to death. “The government couldn’t do anything and as a church we said we need to do something,” said Berthier.
He reached out to Anglican Aid and through the generosity of our supporters, we sent funds for food distribution by the local churches. But the story didn’t finish there. By demonstrating the love of Jesus through practical care, many people came to Christ and joined the church. Forty new churches were planted in Toliara in six months.
But this rapid growth means there’s an urgent need to equip church leaders with Bible training so they can disciple new Christians who are thirsty to know more about the love of Jesus.
By donating to Anglican Aid’s Training Pastors projects, you can help equip pastors in Madagascar (and beyond!) to understand and proclaim the truth of God’s word.
It is true we learned about evangelism in our dioceses but since I arrived here at St Patrick’s, I have grown in skills. When I went back to my diocese and practised what I learned here – when I was sent by the college for practical experience – we saw that it brought many results. There were 120 new converts – Christians who gave their lives to follow Christ.
