The foreigner, the fatherless, the widow. In the Bible, these three come up again and again as those needing special care from God and his people.

These groups were particularly vulnerable, not just because they lacked money and possessions, but because they had lost important relationships – and the security, provision, and love these relationships bring.

Today, around the world, these groups are still some of the most vulnerable, poor, and powerless. But Anglican Aid’s partners are at work, showing God’s sacrificial love and care to them. By giving to Anglican Aid’s End of Financial Year Appeal, you can help our partners provide for their needs, restore them to community in Jesus, and empower them to have a better future.

THE FOREIGNER

Since war broke out in Sudan in 2023, around 1.5 million Sudanese people have fled to Egypt. The Refuge Egypt project in Cairo helps refugees from Sudan and other countries learn English so they can find employment. In these English classes, students are also welcomed, cared for, and helped with navigating life in a foreign land.

THE FATHERLESS

In Zimbabwe, many children have lost their parents to HIV/AIDS. These children often grow up in the care of extended family, who struggle to provide for them due to poverty. The Glen Lorne Orphans project is feeding, clothing, and supporting the education of 80 of these children in a rural area.

THE FATHERLESS

In northern Ethiopia, many families have lost the head of their household in violent conflict. The Heading North project is ploughing the fields of 500 families, so they have enough food to eat and can also generate an income. It is also providing school supplies to fatherless children.

THE WIDOW

In Burundi, 50% of children under five suffer from disease and malnutrition due to contaminated water and food insecurity. The Diocese of Gitega is helping vulnerable widows provide for their children through a food security project, which equips them to improve their harvests. It is also providing access to clean water.

“The LORD watches over the foreigner

and sustains the fatherless and the widow.”

Psalm 146:9

“‘Why are these people [Refuge Egypt staff] giving us this love, this care, this accommodation?’ the refugees ask themselves. And the answer is very clear. It’s because of the love of Jesus Christ. This is Christ’s hand, that gives them the love.”

Diana Demetry

Director of Partnerships, Refuge Egypt

“To be honest, knowing that I will not struggle again for access to clean water is the most beautiful thing that has ever happened to me. It brings peace, security, and joy to me and my two sons. God is truly merciful.”

Febronie

Widow and mother of two, Gitega WASH project participant

“Your sponsorship has done more than just provide me with an education; it has instilled in me a sense of purpose and a desire to help others in need … may God bless you abundantly for your selflessness and generosity.”

Amos

Former Glen Lorne Orphans project participant

“It is only after applying what I learnt through training on modern farming that, for the first time, I started to produce enough for household consumption and sale on the market … God’s love has been revealed to me in the most vivid and practical way through this project.”

Consolate

Widow and mother of seven, Gitega Food Security project participant
