South Africa: Intsika Community Outreach

The Intsika Community Outreach Program is helping underprivileged children on the outskirts of Port Elizabeth through a partnership with the Reformed Evangelical Anglican Church of South Africa. The centre is in the suburb of Greenbushes where they educate and mentor children from 4 years to the end of Primary School.

Most of the local community live in extreme poverty – many do not have water or electricity to their homes and can’t afford essential school supplies. There is a high rate of disease, like HIV and Tuberculosis, as well as alcohol problems, unemployment and family breakdown. Intsika was established in 2016 to prepare young children for school and support them through their primary education.

They focus their efforts on early childhood development and school readiness for 4-5 years olds. There is also a Friday night Kids Club which reaches 120 children from ages 3 – 13 with a fun and interactive Christian message, a meal and lots of encouragement and support. A free homework club also runs during the week to help the children keep up with their studies. Carers are encouraged in their faith through Bible study groups.

The people at Intsika are giving the children of the township the skills and confidence they need to succeed in their education and improve career opportunities in the future. This program has the potential to change the lives of many children and their families.
