Zawadi’s story

Zawadi is fifteen and after many years left untreated, suffers from a deformity in her lower limbs. She has been unable to walk the long distance to her school so has missed the opportunity to learn. Her widowed mother, sold part of their small farm to get help from traditional healers, but she continued to get worse. A worker from Karagwe Disabilities identified her and sent her for treatment at Kagondo Hospital. Zawadi has been receiving medical care and physiotherapy and can now walk, with the assistance of crutches. She is attending vocational leatherwork classes, learning to make school shoes, and is making friends with fellow students.
