Sydney-based Reverend Samuel Majok, leader of the South Sudanese congregation at St Mark’s Oakhurst, is raising funds for many thousands of people impacted by recent severe flooding that devastated most of Jongei State, where Samuel’s family is from.

Anglican Aid is partnering with him to provide emergency assistance to meet immediate needs, such as shelter, mosquito nets, plastic sheeting and food.  Funds will be distributed by South Sudanese Christians through Bishop Gwynne College and the Anglican Diocese of Wernyol in Jonglei State.

The flooding in early August coincided with the massive explosion in Beirut, Lebanon, which may explain why media coverage of the South Sudanese event has been scarce. While the South Sudanese are, sadly, familiar with flood conditions, the volume of water and extensive damage this time far exceeds any flood since 1958. Local airstrips have been washed away, making evacuation by air impossible. Instead, people are loading the young and the elderly, belongings and livestock, into small boats or onto rafts made of plastic sheeting and ‘walking them’ along the river to safety. Many have died.
