EGYPT: “I have turned into a classmate with my own kids”

Due to the ongoing war in Sudan, Noorelhuda and her husband were forced to flee their home. They crossed the border into Egypt and settled in Cairo, where they were recognised as refugees by the UNHCR.
Noorelhuda has three children between the ages of two and seven. When they arrived in Cairo, she enrolled her two older boys in a local community school, where English is the primary language of instruction. However, Noorelhuda’s own English skills were at a basic level.
Rather than letting this stand in her way, Noorelhuda embraced the opportunity to learn alongside her children. She enrolled in the Adult Education English Program run by Anglican Aid’s partner, Refuge Egypt, and has now reached Level 4.
“I have turned into a classmate with my own kids!” she said, smiling. “We often study together. They benefit a lot from me as their tutor, and I benefit from their curriculum too.”
Noorelhuda’s story is one that resonates with many mothers from Sudan, whose English proficiency often mirrors that of their children. Refuge Egypt staff always work patiently with these mothers to improve their English skills, so they can better support their children’s education.
Pray:
- Give thanks for how Refuge Egypt is helping Sudanese refugees like Noorelhuda learn English
- Pray for peace in Sudan
