Esther, a grandmother and farmer in DR Congo was used to cultivating large fields but yielding only small harvests. However, with help from supporters like you, this all changed when she joined the farmer training program in her village.  

The farm schools, run by Just Earth and Anglican Aid’s partner the Diocese of Kindu, operate in local villages. A pastor is connected to each school and runs a Bible study at the beginning of each session.

With investment in spiritual growth, pre-existing farming routines, and a soil of very high quality, the farm schools are equipping participants to use the resources and skills they already have more effectively.  

When Esther joined her local farm school, she was skeptical about the small farm plot she had been given – it was only 13 by 33 meters. How could this yield a larger harvest than what she was already producing? However, when she prepared her own plot of the same size to compare results, Esther was surprised to yield basketfuls of eggplants.  

With help from people like you, communities can now provide for themselves.

Now, full of motivation and confidence, Esther uses the techniques she learnt in the farmer program to cultivate abundant harvests. This season, she has grown maize and groundnuts. Esther is grateful for all she has learned.

“Even at my age, I’m still learning,” she says, “and now I’m teaching my grandchildren to do the same.”

The project currently has 15 farm schools with 170+ participants. Their nurseries are growing cabbage, carrots, leeks, eggplants, local chili peppers, cowpeas and much, much more
