Nigeria: Training pastors amidst persecution

Training for ministry in Nigeria is challenging. Christians can face violence and death for their faith, and poverty means that families and churches are unable to pay a student’s Bible college fees. Insufficient electricity and internet also makes it difficult for students to complete their assignments.

However, with help from supporters like you, God is working through Anglican Aid to train pastors at the Christian Institute in the Diocese of Jos, Nigeria.

Training Pastors projects equip and shape faithful leaders to share God’s Word with clarity, compassion, and confidence. In some of the world’s most under-resourced regions, this training provides knowledge, encouragement and support, enabling pastors to faithfully shepherd their communities and see lives transformed through God’s grace.

Over the last five years, 2,000 pastors, supported by Anglican Aid, have been trained and ordained for ministry. Leaders are equipping God’s people. Churches are being strengthened. An investment of USD$1,800 each year will train a pastor over a three-year program.

Philip is one of these students and is in his third year of a Bachelor of Theology.  Through his study, he has been equipped in theology and ministry skills. Learning about the existence and nature of God has both strengthened Philip’s faith and helped him learn how to share this faith with others.

His participation in outreach programs, run by the college, has also improved his skills in sharing the gospel. Philip also serves the Christian Institute practically as a cobbler and member of its maintenance team.

“Being at Bible college has helped opened my eyes to many things I did not quite understand about God and his creation,” he said. “My life and character is being transformed and shaped at Bible college. I have learned humility, self-control, respect for elders and above all, dependent on the leading of the Holy Spirit in all things.”

Your tax-deductible gift can help train and equip church leaders in Jos, Nigeria, helping men and women faithfully share the gospel, disciple others, and strengthen their churches. When you invest in leadership training, you’re helping grow God’s church for generations to come. Give today and be part of raising up strong leaders who will bring hope, truth, and transformation.

Gifts to the Global Anglican Communion Fund support theological education – the training of pastors and church leaders – and aid and development projects in the neediest dioceses of our Global Anglican Communion. If you don’t live in Australia, you can give to the Global Anglican Communion Fund at any time through Anglican Aid and TrustBridge. This giving option enables you to still make a tax‑deductible donation, helping resource the Global Anglican Communion for Bible-centred ministry in the world’s poorest nations.

For Your Prayers

Pray that God will train up more pastors like Philip and that students and staff would work closely with the Lord, particularly in the face of political unrest and persecution.
