MALAWI: A graduate’s holistic ministry

Visiting Anglican Aid projects at the end of last year was a joy! I witnessed how God is working through your support to grow and strengthen his church in some of the world’s poorest nations. I could see how our long-term partnerships in the gospel were bearing fruit.

I was encouraged to meet Rev. David Mponda, Pastor of Thyolo Parish in the Anglican Diocese of Southern Malawi (pictured above). David was supported through Anglican Aid to study at Bunda Bible College in Tanzania, graduating with a Diploma of Theological Studies in 2022. He expressed thanks saying, “I am very humble to thank Anglican Aid. Your support meant a lot. I learned a lot at Bunda Bible College.”

He told me, “With the knowledge that I got through my studies, I’m trying to implement those techniques in the parish.” It was clear David’s studies had equipped him well for ministry. He preached faithfully with depth of knowledge and understanding of the Bible. He comfortably approached people with the good news, using evangelism skills to go door-to-door reaching families with the gospel. As a result, the church has grown significantly – when David came to the parish there were two stations (the main church and a sub-church), now there are five!

David showed me the successful pig farm he’d set up using knowledge gained through the pig farming demonstrated at Bunda Bible College and the permaculture and entrepreneurship subjects. He’d started with two pigs and now has seven. He recently sold 30 piglets and there’s a huge market for meat. The income generated is being used to support church ministries including caring for 12 orphans, meals for 150 elderly people, and a preschool for 62 children. David said it’s important when doing ministry in poor areas that caring for the community holistically goes hand-in hand with reaching people with the good news.

Rev Willard Kamandani, who’d seen the potential in David and recommended him for support through Anglican Aid, was filled with gratitude because of your generosity, saying, “After graduation from Bunda Bible College, we sent him here and he’s transformed the parish completely… So, we thank you, we glorify God for actually connecting us to you.”

Pray:

  • Praise God for growing his church in Malawi and for the ministries transforming communities.
