A new life for Anchal and her son

Four years ago, Anchal fled her violent home and arrived at Anglican Aid’s partner Bangalore Women’s Safe House, with her four-year-old son Anand.  

Anchal’s life had been hard. Orphaned at a young age, she was placed in the care of relatives. When she was 16, they arranged for her to be married to an older man who already had children from a previous marriage. This was very difficult, and she left, only to begin a relationship with a man who became violent and verbally abusive towards her and the child they had together. 

Anchal eventually sought refuge at the Bangalore Women’s Safe House. When she arrived, she was uncertain and deeply suspicious of others but through counselling and the care she received, Anchal began to heal. Her son attended school where he thrived in the classroom. Anchal became interested in God and started reading the Bible. Today, she is growing in her faith and regularly attends church and weekly prayer meetings. 

Last year, the Safe House staff began working towards Anchal living independently. They helped her find a job in patient care for elderly people but continued to provide her with accommodation and support with Anand’s education. During this time, Anchal learned to save part of her earnings and live within a budget. 

Finally, with the help of the Safe House and two churches, Anchal was able to move into a studio apartment with Anand, now eight years old. The Safe House helped furnish and stock their new home and hosted a small housewarming party to celebrate the new chapter of their lives. 

“The phase ahead will likely be challenging as Anchal navigates her new normal,” said a Safe House staff member. “But we have little doubt that, with the training, counselling, and help she has received, Anchal will be able to stand on her own feet.”
