TANZANIA: Learning, walking, running

Joanitha can now go to school.

Nine-year-old Joanitha couldn’t walk and wasn’t going to school when Karagwe Disabilities staff met her in her village in Kagera. Born with Cerebral Palsy, she was being raised by her grandparents after her parents separated. Joanitha’s grandfather had taken her to witch doctors and traditional healers to try and help her.

“We were running here and there looking for the solution to the challenges facing our granddaughter, but we couldn’t find any,” he said.

Running on her own!

When staff from Karagwe Disabilities, a ministry of the Anglican Church, met Joanitha, they knew that they could help. Rehabilitation would certainly improve her mobility and function. In April last year, Joanitha started to walk and even run without support. She also learned skills to help her gain independence in activities of daily living.

Joanitha is now excited to be starting school. Last year, a Karagwe Disabilities special education teacher came to her home and worked through lessons to prepare her. “Now I am not staying at home while other children are going to school!” she told Karagwe Disabilities staff, beaming.

Pray:

  • Praise God for Karagwe Disabilities’ care for children with disabilities.
  • Pray for Joanitha to flourish as she starts school this year.
