“Thank you, Anglican Aid Australia!” said Gamada, an evangelist with the Anglican Church of Kenya in the tough ministry environment of the Diocese of Marsabit, north Kenya. Many live in poverty in the drought-prone community where he lives.

Supported by Anglican Aid, Generate is helping church workers like Gamada to grow food by providing training, seedlings, and materials to build a small irrigation dam to harness water. Participants have complete ownership of the initiative, digging dams with their own hands and planting and tending their crops.

“In some ways, the assistance given to Gamada and his family by Anglican Aid through the Generate project was not that much. (He was given) a dam liner, the fence around the dam, and seedlings,” said Norm Gorrie, an Australian who worked in Marsabit for many years. “Yet how that has empowered him to be able to grow all these fruit trees and vegetables to feed his family and this at a time when the drought is so horrific with many in hunger and (feeling a) sense of hopelessness. We see too, that not only is this empowering Gamada and his family, but it has also enabled him to give to the church and what a beacon of hope it must be to his neighbours and the wider community.”
