PAKISTAN: Surprised by generosity

This Christian village shared the emergency food supplies they were given with their Muslim neighbours.
When Haroon Younis from Anglican Aid’s partner 1toAnother called Pastor Qaiser, the people in the pastor’s village in Punjab were gathering their cattle and securing their belongings. Rangpur village was not yet cut off, but flood waters around the village were rising. The area had been hit by the worst monsoon flooding in nearly four decades. Haroon told the pastor that a 1toAnother team would be arriving in a few hours with 45 kilograms of emergency food supplies for this predominantly Christian village.
When the 1toAnother team arrived, they were surprised to find many more people in the village than expected. Pastor Qaiser explained that these extra people had fled their inundated homes in another village. They were Muslims and were seeking higher ground. Pastor Qaiser and his church members told the 1toAnother team to give the emergency supplies to the visitors because they’d left their homes and had little.
Anglican Aid’s Zeeshan LaalDin was with the team and said he was surprised by what he saw: “It was such a beautiful, generous response from the Christian villagers who were in great need themselves, with the prospect of things getting worse,” said Zeeshan. “It was amazing to see the gospel being lived out so powerfully.”
In the weeks that followed, Rangpur was cut off by the flood waters and the local Christians continued to host their Muslim neighbours. With support from Anglican Aid, 1toAnother was able to bring further supplies by boat for the 100 families in the village including rice, lentils, tents, mosquito nets, hygiene packs for women, and wood for cooking.
